Our History

Achieving the health-related goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including universal health coverage, requires greater collaboration between stakeholders involved in the discovery, development and delivery of health technologies.

Although the world has seen tremendous health progress in recent years, millions of people still have limited access to the medicines, diagnostics and vaccines they need to survive and thrive. Diseases, such as neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), tuberculosis (TB) and malaria, have often failed to attract required attention and funding. Even when treatments are developed, they are often not available and accessible to people who need them most, especially people living in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

Since 2013, thanks to the support of the Government of Japan, the Global Health Innovative Technology Fund (GHIT Fund) and the UNDP-led Access and Delivery Partnership (ADP) have been working on two sides of the same coin: driving health technology innovation for TB, malaria, NTDs and other neglected diseases on the one hand, and strengthening health systems, policies and capacities to promote access and delivery of health technologies, on the other.

Against this background and as part of the scale up phase of this ongoing collaboration, in January 2019, these three partners - the Government of Japan, ADP and the GHIT Fund - launched a global platform, Uniting Efforts for Innovation, Access and Delivery, with a First Global Dialogue among over 100 stakeholders in Bangkok, Thailand.

Our Strategy

Health technologies, including medicines, vaccines, diagnostics and others, can play an important role in preventing and treating diseases including malaria, TB and NTDs. During the past several decades, we have witnessed reinvigorated efforts to improve innovation, access and delivery of health technologies for some of these diseases.

However, progress is slow, unequal and precarious. Achieving equitable innovation, access and delivery remains a major challenge, requiring aligned action by diverse actors, including R&D funders, innovators and access and delivery stakeholders that usually don’t have pre-established forums and opportunities to engage and share challenges, lessons learn and opportunities.

Uniting Efforts for Innovation, Access and Delivery aims to bring together key stakeholders who are involved in innovation, access and delivery of health technologies for neglected patients – helping to drive the dialogue and collaboration that is essential to getting lifesaving health technologies to those who need them the most.
